GGCRC Remodeling Project

After we moved to the current building on 18th Avenue in 1984, God gave us such blessing that ministry had steady growth. Worship expanded to 3 separate services (English, Mandarin, and Cantonese), Children's Sunday school, High School Sunday school, Adult Sunday Schools (English, Mandarin, and Cantonese). Besides Sunday activity, Opportunity Unlimited uses the building for school for Mentally Handicapped Monday through Friday. There is after school program for neighborhood grammar school children every afternoon as well as Chinese school every Saturday morning. We have been using literally every corner of the building.

In 1992, in order to accommodate programs and utilize the building better the first remodeling committee was formed to study the possibility. The original idea that time was to remodel 1st and 2nd floor to add more class rooms by enclosing some of open areas that were not utilized well. By December of 1995 the idea of adding 3rd floor was born. At the end of 1996 the Vision Committee was formed to study the future of GGCRC and alternatives to accommodate the growth. The committee found its imperative to add more space to accommodate God's ministry. Thus it recommended;

  • Remodel 1st & 2nd floors to utilize space better

  • Add 3rd floor and move the sanctuary to 3rd.

  • Be ready to purchase any building if one becomes available near by

In April 1998 a new building committee was formed to implement the new vision and immediately hired a new architect and went to work.

In September 2001, the remodeling process was done and now we

  1. have the sanctuary on the newly added 3rd floor.

  2. have smaller meeting room that can be opened up to extend the sanctuary on the 3rd floor

  3. have a social hall with kitchen on the 2nd floor

  4. have a couple of class rooms on the 2nd floor

  5. have a book room/library on the 2nd floor

  6. have class rooms, church offices and pastors offices on the ground floor

  7. have an elevator

The process is a long and hard one. There are number of regulations and codes that must be satisfied before the city grant us the building permit. During past 4 years San Francisco & Bay Area saw tremendous growth in high-tech business sector and with it the serge in building industry. As economy grew, so did building materials and labor cost. Because of that the budget had to be revised several times. During this process God gave us more blessing by sending us new ministers and increasing the number of all 3 congregations. We are convinced it was God's plan. It can never happen according to our plan, but God's alone.

Our goal and purpose of the building project is a simple one. We remodel the building to serve God better. With that purpose God will guide us and take us through it and His name will be glorified.
